Number All Annotations - Free Online Browser Tool

Renumber every comment and markup in page order, so a review can be answered point by point.

When several people comment on one document, the replies reference positions rather than identifiers, and the thread becomes impossible to follow. Renumbering turns loose markup into an ordered list that can be answered one item at a time.

This number all annotations utility runs completely inside your web browser. Your document is opened locally and processed on your own device using JavaScript and WebAssembly, so your file is never uploaded to any server. There is no signup, no watermark and no limit on how many documents you can handle.

  • 100% client-side - files never leave your device
  • Instant processing, no upload wait
  • Works on desktop, tablet and mobile
  • Free forever, no account required

How to Use the Number All Annotations Tool

Four steps, and the whole thing runs locally on your own device.

  1. Load the reviewed PDF

The document must already contain annotations; comments typed in the PDF itself are the ones that get numbered.

  2. Choose the numbering

Continuous runs through the whole document, or restarts on each page.

  3. Add an optional prefix

Something like "Query " makes the labels readable once they are separated from their page.

  4. Download

The original text of each comment is preserved; only its label changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the comment text lost?

No. The body of each comment is kept and only its label is replaced. An existing number at the start is stripped so you do not end up with "1: 3: the figure is wrong".

Why would I restart numbering per page?

When the document is paginated in the reader as well, per-page numbering avoids a number like 47 appearing against a page that says "Page 3".

Does it renumber highlights with no text?

Yes, in the default mode. Highlights are numbered like any other markup, which is what you want when a reviewer highlighted a paragraph without commenting on it.

What if the document has no annotations?

It says so rather than producing an unchanged copy, because a silent no-op here usually means you loaded the wrong file.

Will this affect who the comment is attributed to?

The visible label changes, but the author information stored with each annotation is left alone. Use this for numbering, not for attributing comments to a person.
