Extract Information Tools

Pulling information out of a document is what turns a PDF into data. Get the text, the metadata, the links or the measurements, so the content can be searched, quoted, catalogued or fed into something else.

  • Extract the text layer, search inside a document, or get a word frequency breakdown
  • Pull document properties, embedded hyperlinks and page dimensions
  • Inspect the fonts a document depends on, which matters before printing it

Extract Information FAQ

Why does extracting text from my scan return almost nothing?

A scan is a picture of text, not text. The characters are pixels until OCR runs, so there is nothing to extract. Run the OCR tool first, which builds a real text layer, and extraction will work from then on.

What is the difference between extracting metadata and reading raw XMP?

The standard properties panel shows the title, author, subject and dates most applications understand. Raw XMP shows the underlying XML, which carries extra fields some tools write and most never display. You normally want the first and only need the second when a document is behaving oddly.

Can I find where a word appears in a long document?

Yes, and the search tool reports the page numbers rather than dumping every hit, which keeps a long document readable. It searches the text layer, so it has the same limitation as extraction on a scanned file.
